IPE RESEARCH

Here are some highlights of the interprofessional education (IPE) and interprofessional collaboration (IPC) research in our college!

Intergenerational & Interprofessional Reserach

Judy Scott and Jillian Raiger, a senior HPNU student, collaborated on a research project funded by the UCCS Undergraduate Research Academy that aimed to understand pre-health student perceptions of aging and their confidence in communicating with older adults. Pre-post surveys (n=72) were conducted with students after a 1 hour therapeutic communication training. The team then offered two intergenerational cooking classes for students and older adults from the community through the Center for Active Living as an immersion learning opportunity. The findings of this project, with data analysis support from Joey Lee, showed that both the trainings and intergenerational immersion cooking classes improved student perceptions of aging and confidence in communication skills. Thus, additional interventions like these could be implemented to increase student knowledge, awareness, confidence, and interest in working with older adults in their future careers.
